Rider is a fantastic Puggle from Pennsylvania! Named after Catasauqua Rough Riders, Rider is a cool looking Puggle because his coat is all black! Very cool!

Rider and his brother Riley "go crazy and wrestle constantly" whenever they get together, and tire out their parents!

Last time we heard from Rider the Puggle, he was being trained to ring a bell whenever he had to go outside. Rider's mom reports that he started ringing the bell on the very first day! Good job buddy!

Some breeders have puggles that show a genetic defect which results in a condition known as "puppy strangle."

This condition affects the skin of a puggle, and if left untreated it will spread down the body and eventually "strangle" and kill your puggle!

Fortunately, this condition is very treatable with antibiotics. It appears as a kind of dermatitis on the puggle's head and may be swollen and raw.

If you look very closely at this sweet, little puggle, Jagger, you can see her head is affected by the 'strangle.' Who wants to see their adorable puggle suffer needlessly?

Breeders who have puggles that are afflicted with this genetic and stress-induced condition should stop breeding at once. Do your research and try to find a reputable breeder, and hopefully one that has references and satisfied customers with whom you can check before buying a puggle.

If your puggle has "puppy strangle" or any other genetic disorder, don't panic. He or she is still capable of being a perfect puggle and in all likelihood will not show signs of his or her disorder once it has been identified and treated.

What's important is that you know all the signs and symptoms, so you can get your puggle treated as soon a problem arises!

What could a puggle want besides your love and attention this Christmas?

Well, how about a nice new sweater for those cold winter months, for starters? And maybe one of those fake stockings filled with toys and treats? Any gift that enhances play time with your dog is one they're sure to appreciate.

Here are some suggestions:

A laser pointer. Your puggle will love chasing that light around. You can get some really cool ones now that have a green beam that is so strong, it will actually double as a pointer to constellations. That's right, you can point out stars with these things, no I'm not kidding.

Inflatable Remote control cars. Puggles will go wild trying to figure out what's going on when you drive a small remote control car around the living room. You and the fam will have a blast, and so will your dog! I recommend taking a little fabric to dress the car up to look like an animal. Race that thing out into the living room and let the mayhem begin!

Tennis ball launcher. Here's another one that the dog in the family will appreciate. With one of these devices, you can whip a tennis ball hundreds of feet with minimal effort. Your dog will love this, and they're gonna get completely tuckered out from using it! Plus, you'll have a blast slingshotting tennis balls.

This time of year, you may be tempted to fill your house with this popular and lovely holiday decoration. You may have heard the rumors that poinsettias are fatal to pets if ingested. Lucky for you, this is a myth! Your poinsettias and puggle can co-exist this holiday season.

You might want to keep your poinsettias out of reach of curious canine mouths, because poinsettias can cause mild gastrointestinal irritation such as diarrhea or even vomiting in severe cases. But poinsettias are not toxic to pets. So decorate with this festive and beautiful plant this holiday!

This puggle is now eleven months old and has filled Caroline's life with sugar and spice and everything nice. Here Cinnamon is 7 or 8 months old and is already showing her personality!

Caroline says about Cinnamon: "She's a very inquisitive dog, and chews on almost everything. Bones, shoes, brushes, chairs." As a puggle owner, Caroline, I certainly can relate to that! What wonderful companions Puggles can be and in these photos, you can see how much fun they can be, too. Steven wrote in recently about his Puggle, Alli, who is about 13 years old but from this photo (looking a little like Harriet Potter) she could pass for three years old.

Steven had this to say about his Puggle companion, Alli:

"...she is very affectionate, agreeable and loyal member of our family. She loves to cuddle up with us under a blanket and relax."

Steven goes on to say about Alli:

Poison in Puggles?!

Many people don't understand how many common household items might be dangerous to their pets. Alcohol, some decorative palm plants, holiday decorations like mistletoe, and even vitamins can be potentially fatal to our four-legged family members! Even more dangerous are many cleaning products, weed-killers, and "rodenticides" (commonly known as rat poison).

If your puggle ingests any of these potentially fatal household items, or any time they exhibit a complete and immediate loss of bowel control (which might suggest an unseen poisoning), you can induce vomiting safely with a small dose of everyday Hydrogen Peroxide (commonly kept in first aid kits).*

Hydrogen Peroxide (3% solution) can be found at your local drugstore and is the safest way to induce vomiting at home. This is the first step to help remove potentially harmful substances from your puggle's stomach. While ipecac is often used to induce vomiting in both adults and children, this is not a reliable way of getting a pet to vomit. Other suggestions such as salt or mustard are not only unreliable, but can be potentially harmful. These common "remedies" can have very harmful side-effects like sodium poisoning, and they can even cause cardiac arrhythmias!

Hydrogen Peroxide, on the other hand, is typically quite successful in causing pets to vomit, and is completely safe for your puggle (after it's done fizzing in your pet's stomach, it breaks down into its parts - water and oxygen!). It usually takes about 10-15 minutes before your puggle will vomit after drinking Hydrogen Peroxide. It also makes it easier if you feed it a little bit of moistened bread (either with milk or water).

Make sure that you give your puggle the right dose of Hydrogen Peroxide - a standard is 1 mL per pound, (here's a conversion chart, since we don't all have test tubes in our kitchens!). Also be sure never to force ANY liquid down into your puggle's mouth - they might accidentally inhale (or aspirate) it, which can lead to serious complications, including pneumonia.

*You should always contact your local or emergency vet before taking any action toward treating your pet medically. Some ingested chemicals can cause more damage if they are regurgitated, so only induce vomiting if your vet gives you the go-ahead.

Jagger - Have You Ever Seen Your Puggle Do This?

Kristine in Ohio has a puggle, Jagger. Many times when Kristine is talking to Jagger, Jagger will look at her and Jagger will tilt her head to one side, as if to say, "What are you talking about?" I'm sure other puggle owners have seen their darling puggles do this, too. I really think that this reaction is an indication of exceptional intelligence in this particular dog breed. What do others think? I would love to hear your opinions.

Puggles are Brave

Many dogs, Puggles included, are afraid of loud noises and creatures that they can't recognize (like, for example, me in a refrigerator box making growling noises).

But the interesting thing about Puggles is what they do after they encounter something scary. Generally, their curiosity combined with bravery gets the better of them and they decide to stick around and figure things out.

They're likely to go crazy during a thunderstorm, running back and forth in front of the window rather than cowering in the basement. This is an endearing trait, but at the same time it can sometimes get them in trouble, like when something is ACTUALLY dangerous. Like a car backing up, or a bear.

Puggles are extremely intelligent. When playing games where the object is to trick your puggle, you're going to have to be ON POINT if you hope to continue tricking him or her.

Puggles learn your moves so fast that you need to come up with new ones constantly. If you pretend to throw something in one direction so you can start running away from your puggle in the other direction, enjoy it; that trick will work about twice more, and then your puggle won't so much as LOOK in the other direction when you pretend to throw something.

Puggles have your number, and you need to be really clever to outsmart these dogs... but it's fun trying!

Dangers of Kennels for Your Puggle

As I've mentioned in the past, my puggle lost her hearing due to an ear infection and the antibiotic that was used to treat that infection.

This type of hearing loss in dogs takes place over a period of days, and if the symptoms of hearing loss are caught in time and you stop giving your puggle the ear medication, he or she can repair the hearing loss over time.

However, when your puggle is in a kennel, the people keeping an eye on the dogs can't pay the same amount of attention to your puggle that you would, and they don't know your dog well enough to notice something like hearing loss.

So if your puggle is on a new kind of medication, or has any other conditions which may require lots of undivided attention, then you MUST avoid kennels at all costs.

They simply don't have the manpower to care for your puggle the way your puggle wants to be cared for!

Some alternatives include:

leaving your puggle with friends or family
asking your vet if you can delay administering a new medication until after the holidays
finding a family that will take a puggle for a short period of time in lieu of a kennel, and making them aware of your puggle's medical needs

There's always an alternative to putting your dog in a kennel, if you're willing to do the research.

Your puggle will thank you for it!

How Smart is Your Puggle?

One sure sign of a smart Puggle is how they use their paws. When a dog makes extensive use of his or her paws either when playing, investigating objects or interacting with people, that's a sure sign of an intelligent Puggle!

My Puggle, for example, whenever she wants to get my attention or is presenting herself to new people, will stand on her hind legs and put her paws straight up over her head. This is a habit she developed at a very early age, and now she'll sit and put both of her front paws straight up at the "sit pretty" command!

Not perfect, but you get the idea.

Did you know that some medications that are meant to treat an ear infection in your puggle can actually cause deafness?

It's extremely uncommon, but it happened to my puggle. In these cases, it's key that you notice your dog's loss of hearing as soon as it develops, since catching it early can help save your puggle's hearing!

Here are some of the symptoms of hearing loss in your puggle:

your puggle appears to be ignoring verbal commands
he or she cannot be awoken from a nap without physical contact.
your puggle responds to sound but cannot tell where the sound is coming from. -flaps his or her ears excessively.
he or she attempts to rub ears with paws.

So get to know your puggle, and you'll be able to spot any problems the minute they develop!

Training Your Puggle

Puggles are a very "engaging" and energetic breed. They'll want to interact with you physically as much as possible, but when it comes to begging for food or standing and putting their front paws on everyone's legs, you'll want to start training your dog.

Here's a good training exercise that will teach your puggle not to bug you when you're eating, and to "sit and stay" on command.

Ther first thing you'll need is an appetizing dog treat. (As a sidenote, never feed your puggle chocolate, as it can be deadly for dogs.) Next, make your puggle sit. Let them see the food in your left hand, and show them the palm of your right hand as you say in a commanding voice, "Stay!"

Now back up, maintaining eye contact and showing your puggle the palm of your hand as you continue to say "Stay!" Your dog will probably come running after you the first few times, at which point you have to make it very clear that that was wrong. Yell "No, bad!" and give them a light tap on the nose. Sounds like fun, doesn't it? But it's actually a lot more dangerous than you might think.

If your Puggle rides around in the car without a safety restraint, they'd be in serious trouble even in a minor car accident. I recommend buying a safety harness for your Puggle to wear in the car. They're not that expensive and they'll save your Puggle's life in the event of a wreck.

My Puggle wears one and she loves it. It has a soft cotton interior, so it's more like a warm coat than a harness. It also keeps her from jumping out the window and running around, which she actually did on a couple occasions. Don't wait for something to go wrong... Be proactive about protecting your Puggle!

Barking at the Food Dish?

Some Puggles will bark at their food bowls, and sometimes even nose them over in order to eat off the floor.

But why is it that some Puggles are more comfortable eating off the floor, away from their food dishes?

My theory is that she learned this behavior as a puppy, when her brothers and sisters would compete for positioning at the food dish. When runts or otherwise "harassed" (for lack of a lighter term) puppies grow up, they often demonstrate an aversion to the food bowl, as this was the scene of some serious contention in their youths!

Sometimes a change in the appearance of the bowl helps, or even a change in height. You might try a new bowl with a new look, or putting the food up on a shoe box. In time, your puppy should learn the routine and become more confortable with her eating situation.

Here's a bowl that could help change the way your Puggle thinks about dinner time. The

Sometimes Puggles are so excited to go on a walk or chase birds that they pull too hard on the leash, making it hard for them to breathe properly.

A good solution to this issue is equipping your Puggle with a harness rather than a collar. The harness distributes the pressure across your Puggle's chest and shoulders rather than across the delicate neck area.

Another advantage of the harness is that it's more difficult for your Puggle to slip out of it, compared with the relative ease of slipping out of a collar.

Overall, the harness is a better solution for your Puggle than a collar when it comes to leashed walking. Just make sure to remove the harness once you're back in the house, because your Puggle might get too hot with it on, and he or she might even chew it apart if they get sick of wearing it!

Puggles Love New Year's Eve

Actually, Puggles don't really know the date. BUT, Puggles do love to party, so be sure to include your Puggle in your New Year's plans this evening!

And if you're having people over to your house for a party, make sure you keep a close eye on your Puggle. Smaller dogs are easily stepped on, sat on, or kicked, and since they're so small, someone might not even notice. Smaller dogs like Puggle are extremely susceptible to sustaining serious injuries from an inattentive guest or a raging drunk stumbling around your house.

So to be safe, it's best to keep your Puggle in a separate room (or in his or her crate if they're used to that), if you can't pay close attention to them all night!

Snuggle with a Puggle

It's well known in the dog world that Puggles tend to be very cuddly and affectionate dogs. Puggles like to be held and will gladly curl up in bed with you at the end of a long day.

One way to ensure that your Puggle will enjoy being held is to carry your Puggle around as a puppy. Pick him or her up a few times a day and just sit in a chair for a few minutes, and you're sure to raise a happy and snuggley Puggle!

But be warned: if your Puggle gets into the habit of sleeping in your bed at night, they might like it so much that sleeping in the crate will no longer be an option!

Then you can poke holes in the top of the box, stick your arms out and run around the house like a... well, like a dude in a box! Your Puggle will LOVE it!

Will a Puggle get along with a cat?

The short answer is no. But the complete answer depends on whether the Puggle and the feline are raised together from a very young age. This is the best case scenario, and the one most likely to result in a happy friendship between your Puggle and your cat.

However, even this is no guarantee. Puggles are very energetic and playful, and may harass a feline member of the family to the point where it's not a livable situation for the cat. The cat may feel like he or she is being attacked by the Puggle when the Puggle is trying to play, resulting in your Puggle being clawed, or your cat retreating to the garage or basement permanently.

There are exceptions, but generally speaking, cats and Puggles have very different temperaments and ways of handling themselves, and therefore do not make good housemates.

If you already own cats, another thing to consider is that you'll have to spend virtually all of your time raising your Puggle at the expense of interacting with your cats. You'll probably see a lot less of your cats.

A Puggle introduced into a house full of cats will certainly change the dynamic of your living situation; to what extent this change will be negative depends on the temperaments of your Puggle and your cat!

Greenies

Greenies are green dog treats that are nutritious and beneficial for your Puggle's teeth. They freshen breath, remove plaque, and are shaped like little toothbrushes, which can only help.

The problem that some Puggle owners are finding with these delicious Greenies is that their Puggles love them so much, they eat them too quickly and then get sick. There have even been some reports that when Puggles devour these treats too quickly, they may cause serious trauma in their digestive tracts, or even death!

I have stopped giving my Puggle Greenies, because for me, it's just not worth the risk. For the dental health of your Puggle, any kind of hard dog bone helps, along with regular brushing!

Puggles are amazing guard dogs, which is another throwback to their beagle forebears. There have been numerous occasions where a black bear has been outside my house in the country, and without fail, if that bear comes within 50 feet of the house, my puggle goes crazy! And so I know I better be careful if I have to go outside.

It really works without fail, she just flips out if there's anything she doesn't recognize in the vicinity of the house.

If so, the best thing you can to is to research the dog breeds that make up a Puggle: the Beagle and the Pug. By discovering the temperaments and attitudes of both the Beagle and the Pug as purebreeds, you'll have some idea as to your future Puggle's personality.

Any character trait of the Beagle or the Pug can be present in their Puggle puppies, in any combination. So if you don't want a dog that has lots of energy, wants lots of playtime and might even give you that Beagle howl once in a while, then maybe the Puggle isn't for you.

Another great thing about puggles: they're really clean animals.

They have a very short coat of fur, and they don't produce that much oil on their skin or hair, so they don't need baths as often as other dogs and they don't smell like dirty dogs. Unless they've been out in the rain or rompin' in the mud or something.

I mean, you should still give them regular baths, but you're not gonna be holding your nose every time your puggle comes into the room if you skip a bath, either.

Since Puggles are a smaller breed of dog, make sure when your Puggle goes in for his or her shots that the vet only gives ONE shot on any given day! More than one shot in your little Puggle can cause a reaction which can be very unpleasant, or even deadly, for your dog.

A vet gave my Puggle two shots in one day, and she was lethargic and sick for many hours the next day. We had to give her baby aspirin and just wait for her to come around... it was a scary experience. Luckily, she fully recovered within 24 hours. But spare your dog this experience and make sure your vet knows... only one shot per visit!

Tip: How to Raise an Affectionate Puggle

The nice thing about having a relatively small dog like a puggle is that you can pick them up and carry them around with you.

But in order to have a puggle that likes being held, you have to begin holding and carrying him or her from their earliest days as a puppy. If you hold them and carry them on a regular basis, you'll raise a puggle that loves to be held and cradled like an infant!

Another good habit to get your puggle used to is spending time in their crate. Often, a puggle owner will let the puppy wander around the house freely, but later in the puggle's life will begin to put them into the crate overnight or during the day.

I don't recommend leaving any dog in their crate for long periods of time, or for hours every day. It can be too easy to relegate a dog to the crate when your life gets too hectic, and this is extremely unfair to the dog, who has energy and wants affection and playtime.

That said, if you accustom your puggle to spending some time in their crate, they'll come to see it as their own spot; a place of safety, comfort and security, where they'll spend time without much complaint should the need arise either for travel or if there's a lot of campany in the house!
